Vintage Tackle Box Makeover: Dad's Well-Loved Toolbox Gets a Creative New Life
Share
Sometimes the most meaningful upcycle projects aren't the ones found at a thrift store or garage sale—they're the ones that come with a story.
This vintage aluminum tackle box was generously given to me by a friend after belonging to her father for many years.
While it showed plenty of signs of faithful use, it was still structurally sound and far too special to end up forgotten on a shelf. Instead of restoring it to its original purpose, I decided to transform it into something both beautiful and practical that I could use every day in my workshop.
Today it serves as the perfect organizer for the hardware and accessories used with my KAMSnaps Professional Rivet Presses, proving once again that vintage pieces can enjoy an entirely new life.
A Well-Loved Vintage Tackle Box with Character
The tackle box had everything I love about vintage finds:
- Heavy-duty aluminum construction
- Classic cantilever trays
- Wonderful patina
- Original hardware and handle
- Plenty of storage compartments
It also carried years of memories, including the original owner's name painted across the top.
Rather than erase its history completely, I wanted to preserve its character while giving it a fresh new purpose.
Step 1: A Thorough Cleaning
Every successful furniture makeover or vintage restoration begins with proper preparation.
After removing years of dirt and grime, the aluminum surface was ready for paint. The original hardware was carefully removed so everything could be painted evenly while preserving the vintage look.

I try to remember to always take a photo of any hardware I remove from a project. In particular, I want to record exactly how it went together so I don't run into any issues when reassembling.
Step 2: Custom Cricut Cardstock Organizers
One of my favorite parts of this project wasn't the painting—it was customizing the interior.
Using my Cricut machine, I designed and cut heavy cardstock liners that fit perfectly inside each compartment of the tackle box trays.
Then I used the Cricut Pen feature to write labels directly onto each divider.
Now every compartment has a designated purpose for organizing:
- Rivet dies
- Punches
- Key fob hardware
- Rivet components
- Specialty tools
- Small accessories
The custom labels make it incredibly easy to find exactly what I need while working on creative projects.
This simple Cricut project turned a vintage tackle box into an organized workshop storage system.
Step 3: Spraying DIY Paint White Swan
For the exterior, I wanted a clean, timeless finish that would complement my workshop.
I sprayed the entire tackle box using my Harbor Freight HVLP spray gun and DIY Paint White Swan (diluting the paint to approximately 3 parts paint to 1 part water so it flowed smoothly through my spray gun without clogging), which created a smooth, even finish while preserving all of the beautiful details.
Step 4: Sealing with DIY Big Top
After painting, I sealed the finish with DIY Paint Big Top Liquid Top Coat. I slightly diluted the Big Top, and this first coat of Big Top not only created a strong protective barrier, but it also prepared the surface to receive a decor transfer.
Step 5: Adding Iron Orchid Designs Painterly Florals
This is where the transformation really came to life.
I chose the gorgeous Iron Orchid Designs (IOD) Painterly Florals Transfer, placing the oversized sunflower artwork along the sides of the tackle box.
The botanical design softened the industrial look of the aluminum while adding warmth, color, and vintage cottage charm.
The combination of crisp white paint and vibrant florals completely changed the personality of the piece.

Step 6: Final Protective Finishes
Since IOD transfers require sealing after application, I added another protective coat of DIY Big Top Liquid Top Coat. The result is a durable finish that protects both the painted surface and the IOD transfer while standing up to everyday workshop use.
Lastly, I used a Sharpie oil-based paint marker to give the handle and hardware a golden touch!
A New Purpose in My Workshop
Today this once-forgotten tackle box has become one of the most useful storage pieces in my craft room.
It now keeps my KAMSnaps Professional Rivet Press accessories organized, including:
- Rivet dies
- Key fob hardware
- Snaps
- Rivets
- Specialty press components
- Small crafting hardware
Everything has its own labeled compartment, making projects faster and much more enjoyable.
Sometimes organization can be just as beautiful as decoration.
