One of my favorite things about thrifting isn't finding something beautiful...

It's finding something that could become beautiful.

That's exactly what happened when I spotted this old suitcase at the Goodwill Outlet—better known around here as "the Bins."

It wasn't glamorous.

It had seen better days.

But underneath the worn exterior I could see possibilities.

Instead of luggage, I imagined a greeting card display for my very first craft show.

Sometimes the best projects begin with a little imagination.

Starting with a Blank Canvas

The outside of the suitcase was structurally sound but tired.

I cleaned everything thoroughly before getting to work.

The interior needed even more attention, so I sealed it with stain blocker before painting the inside DIY Sandy Blonde, a soft neutral color. Once everything was dry, I lined the interior with faux leather to give it a clean, finished appearance that would also protect the greeting cards.

Small details make a huge difference.

Refreshing the Exterior

With the inside complete, it was time to give the outside new life.

I carefully painted the trim (including taping off the hardware) while preserving the vintage character that made the suitcase so charming in the first place.

Watching this worn suitcase slowly transform was incredibly satisfying.

Adding Personality

A plain suitcase would have worked...

…but I wanted something that reflected my style.

Using the JRV grain sack stencil I carefully placed painted stripes, adding just enough detail to make the suitcase feel custom without overwhelming its vintage charm.

Those finishing touches gave it personality while still allowing the greeting cards inside to remain the star of the display.

Creating the Card Display

The real challenge came after the painting was finished.

I needed a way to display greeting cards attractively while making them easy for customers to browse.

After quite a bit of measuring, designing, and experimenting, I built a removable insert that fit perfectly inside the suitcase.

Several design revisions later, I finally had a display that held the cards securely while showcasing them beautifully.

A while back I had picked up a piece of artwork (for $1.91!) at our local thrift store just to repurpose the frame. (I'll write another blog about that later!) Rather than discard the small brass plate that was on the original artwork, I stored it in the hardware section of my garage for future use. Using my Cricut Maker and the engraving tool, I engraved my business name onto the back side of the little brass plate and glued it to this upcycled suitcase. It became the finishing touch that tied everything together.

The Finished Piece

What began as a forgotten suitcase from the Goodwill Bins became one of the most unique displays in my first craft show booth.

Not only did it attract attention, but it also became a wonderful conversation starter with customers.

Projects like this remind me why I love upcycling.

You don't need expensive materials.

You simply need the willingness to look beyond what something is today and imagine what it could become tomorrow.
