Vintage Jewelry Armoire Makeover: From Yard Sale Find to Floral Showpiece

Vintage Jewelry Armoire Makeover: From Yard Sale Find to Floral Showpiece

Sometimes the projects that intimidate us the most become our favorites.

That was certainly the case with this vintage jewelry armoire. I found it at a yard sale and immediately saw its potential, but once I got it home, it sat untouched for months. Every time I looked at it, I found another reason to work on something else instead. The project seemed too big, too time-consuming, and honestly, a little overwhelming.

Eventually, I decided it was time to stop procrastinating and simply begin.

The Biggest Challenge Wasn't the Paint

When I opened the drawers, I discovered they were all lined with an older drawer liner. While the fragrance wasn't unpleasant, it constantly reminded me that this beautiful cabinet had belonged to someone else. Since I planned to offer the piece for sale in my vendor booth, I wanted the new owner to experience a completely fresh start.

That meant learning something I'd never done before—removing drawer liner.

After researching different methods, I found a process that worked well. I soaked each drawer using warm, wet paper towels, allowing the moisture to soften the adhesive just long enough to loosen the liner. The key was not letting the water remain on the wood any longer than necessary.

It wasn't difficult, but with six drawers, it definitely required patience.

Once the liner was removed, I sanded the inside of every drawer until it was smooth and clean.

Giving the Drawers a Beautiful New Interior

Rather than simply leaving the drawer interiors plain, I decided to make opening each drawer part of the experience.

I applied Roycycled Decoupage Paper in Typography Love to the inside walls of each drawer before lining the bottoms with crisp white faux vinyl. The result was fresh, clean, and much more inviting than the original lining.

As a finishing touch, I painted the drawer sides using DIY Cottage Color in Honey. It's one of those little details many people might never notice—but I always believe the inside of a piece should be just as thoughtfully finished as the outside.

Bringing the Exterior to Life

For the outside of the cabinet, I chose DIY Cottage Color in Azure, applying three coats to achieve the rich, vibrant finish I envisioned.

One of the things I love about DIY Cottage Color is that it has a built-in sealer. That meant I didn't need to apply DIY Big Top Liquid Top Coat before adding my decorative elements.

To create the floral design, I combined beautiful elements from the IOD Rose Botanical and IOD Catharina transfers. Once the transfers were applied, I sealed everything with DIY Big Top Liquid Top Coat to protect the design for years to come.

Finishing Details Make All the Difference

I also replaced the original hardware with vintage drawer knobs that I'd purchased at a yard sale long before I had a project for them.

I'm always on the lookout for unique hardware while I'm out thrifting. Even if I don't have an immediate use for it, experience has taught me that the perfect project eventually comes along. Having a collection of interesting knobs and pulls allows me to choose hardware that truly complements each piece instead of settling for whatever happens to be available.

One detail I intentionally left alone was the inside of the two side doors. Unlike the drawers, they didn't retain the lingering fragrance, so there was no need to remove their original lining.

The Finished Result

After months of avoiding this project, it became one of my favorite furniture transformations.

The vibrant Azure finish, delicate floral transfers, fresh drawer interiors, and vintage hardware completely transformed a forgotten yard sale find into a one-of-a-kind statement piece.

The best part?

It sold quickly in my vendor booth, and I hope its new owner enjoys it for many years to come.

Sometimes the projects that seem the most intimidating simply require taking the first step. I'm certainly glad I finally did.
