From Dingy Metal Wastebasket to Stylish Home Décor
An Easy Thrift Store Upcycle with DIY Paint
One of my favorite things about thrift store shopping is finding everyday items that most people overlook.
On this trip, I spotted a tall metal wastebasket. It had good bones, but years of use had left both the inside and outside looking scratched, stained, and worn. While most shoppers probably saw an old trash can, I saw an opportunity to create something beautiful.
With a little DIY Paint, an IOD decor transfer, and a bit of imagination, this ordinary wastebasket was transformed into a stylish storage container that looks right at home in an organized craft room.
Step 1: A Good Cleaning
Every upcycling project starts with a thorough cleaning.
Since this piece had been used as a trash can, I cleaned both the inside and outside to remove dirt, residue, and anything that might interfere with paint adhesion. Once it was completely dry, it was ready for its makeover.
Step 2: Fresh Paint Makes All the Difference
For this project, I chose DIY Paint White Swan, one of my favorite soft whites for creating timeless, neutral décor.
DIY Paint adheres beautifully to clean surfaces and gives projects a smooth, matte finish with wonderful character.
Beginning with the bottom, I applied several light coats, allowing each coat to dry before adding the next. Slowly, the aged metal disappeared beneath a fresh, clean finish.
Step 3: Don't Forget the Inside
Many makeovers focus only on what people can see, but I wanted this piece to look beautiful from every angle.
The inside received the same careful attention as the outside. Covering the years of discoloration completely with a repurposed poster and some leftover fabric adhered to foam core board transformed the look of the piece and made it feel brand new again.
Step 4: Make it Pretty and Protect the Finish
I sealed the surface with DIY Big Top liquid top coat before adding an IOD decor transfer to the outside. I then sealed over the top of the transfer with DIY Big Top to protect the transfer and help the finish stand up to everyday use.
Because I planned to repurpose the wastebasket as decorative storage rather than use it for trash again, Big Top was the perfect choice to provide added durability while maintaining the beautiful matte finish.
A New Purpose
One of the things I love most about upcycling is finding new uses for old objects.
Instead of collecting trash, this former wastebasket now serves as attractive storage in my craft room. It's perfect for holding rolled papers, wrapping paper, poster tubes, faux leather, and other large crafting supplies.

With a little creativity and quality products, it's possible to turn something destined for the landfill into something beautiful, useful, and uniquely your own.
