Floral Storage Chest Makeover | Vintage Blanket Chest with Iron Orchid Designs Transfer

There's something incredibly satisfying about taking an ordinary storage chest and transforming it into a beautiful piece of furniture that becomes the focal point of a room. When I found this storage chest, I immediately saw its potential. It had clean lines, plenty of storage, and a solid structure with one exception—one of its front feet had broken off.

Using the other front foot as a template, I cut a piece of wood and glued and clamped it in place. Once that repair was complete, it was full steam ahead!

With DIY Paint in the color of "White Swan," an Iron Orchid Designs (IOD) Decor Transfer called "Wall Flower," and the addition of vintage script using the "Kindest Regards" 12x12 stamp by IOD, this once-plain chest became a one-of-a-kind statement piece that would be equally at home in a bedroom, entryway, living room, or craft space.

If you're looking for storage chest makeover ideas, painted furniture inspiration, or creative ways to use Iron Orchid Designs products, I hope this project inspires your next furniture makeover.

Before the Makeover

The chest was structurally sound but lacked personality. Sometimes those are my favorite pieces because they become a blank canvas for creativity.

Rather than completely covering the piece with layers of embellishment, I wanted to let one beautiful design become the star.

Choosing the Design

For this makeover, I selected the Iron Orchid Designs "Wall Flower" Decor Transfer, featuring oversized vintage-inspired botanical florals that instantly transformed the front of the chest into a work of art.

To add another layer of vintage charm, I incorporated the IOD "Kindest Regards" Stamp, creating subtle handwritten script that complements the floral imagery without overwhelming it.

Two coats of DIY Dark & Decrepit Liquid Patina were applied to the lid, followed by the application of grain sack stripes. That simple detail balances the colorful florals and gives the piece a timeless, furniture-quality finish.

Sometimes the simplest design elements have the biggest impact.

The Finished Transformation

What was once an ordinary storage chest has become a beautiful functional piece that offers both storage and style.

It could easily serve as:

  • A blanket chest at the foot of a bed
  • Entryway storage
  • Living room blanket storage
  • Toy chest
  • Cottage-style coffee table
  • Hope chest
  • Craft room storage
  • Guest room storage chest

One of my favorite aspects of furniture refinishing is creating pieces that are just as practical as they are beautiful.

Why I Love Using Iron Orchid Designs Products

One reason I enjoy working with Iron Orchid Designs (IOD) products is that they allow furniture to tell a story.

The Wall Flower Decor Transfer brings dramatic botanical beauty without requiring advanced artistic skills, while the Kindest Regards Stamp adds subtle vintage character and depth.

Layering these elements together creates furniture that feels collected, timeless, and unique.

Tips for Creating a Similar Look

If you'd like to create a similar furniture makeover:

  • Begin with a solid, well-built piece.
  • Choose one statement transfer as your focal point.
  • Add complementary stamped details for depth and interest.
  • Balance bold decorative elements with simple painted surfaces.
  • Seal your piece  with a water-based top coat (like DIY Big Top) before and after application of the decor transfer.
  • It is not necessary to seal the stamped ink; however, it is essential that you give the ink several days to fully dry. Otherwise, the ink will smear.

Final Thoughts

One of the greatest joys of furniture refinishing is watching an ordinary piece become something extraordinary.

This storage chest now offers more than just hidden storage—it brings warmth, character, and timeless vintage style to any room.

Projects like this are why I love creating for Crazy 4 Castors. Every rescued piece tells a new story, and every makeover is an opportunity to inspire someone else to see beauty in furniture that others might overlook.
