Thrifted Frame Turned Hair Bow Holder
Share
Sometimes the simplest thrifted finds make the most useful projects!
I picked up this large frame while thrifting and decided to turn it into a pretty and practical hair bow holder for my granddaughter. With all those bows, headbands and hair accessories, I knew a little extra organization would come in handy!
Turning a Frame Into Hair Bow Storage
I didn’t get a photo of the original thrifted frame before I started (sometimes you just have to jump into a project!), but the transformation itself was very simple.
I removed the glass and backing so I was left with the open frame, which I painted in DIY Paint White Swan. Once the paint dried, I used a damp cloth to wipe back some of the paint from the details, giving the frame a slightly distressed look. I then sealed the frame with DIY Big Top.
For the inside, I covered a piece of foam core board with a remnant of textured white fabric, wrapping the fabric around the edges and taping it securely to the back.
Next, I added several lengths of colorful striped ribbon vertically across the fabric-covered board, securing them at the top and bottom. On one of the vertical rows, I added loops of ribbon to hold horseshoe-shaped headbands.
I placed everything back into the frame and secured the foam core board with tacks from the back. I then covered the entire back with kraft paper for a nice, clean finish and used the frame’s existing hanging hardware.
Lastly, I added 17 white cup hooks along the bottom of the frame for hanging elastic-style headbands.
The vertical ribbons became the perfect place to clip barrettes and hair bows, while the ribbon loops and cup hooks provided plenty of room for different styles of headbands.
And this project has definitely passed the test of time! I originally made it for my granddaughter when she was barely a year old. She is still using it today — now sharing it with her little sister — so it has held up remarkably well.
Pretty AND Practical
Once everything was added, this thrifted frame went from ordinary wall décor to a colorful organizer filled with bows, clips and headbands.

I especially love projects like this because they give an inexpensive thrifted find an entirely new purpose. Instead of keeping all those pretty hair accessories tucked away in a drawer, they can become part of the room décor — and they're much easier to find!
The next time you spot an old frame at a thrift store or yard sale, don't overlook it. With a little fabric, some ribbon and a few hooks, it just might become the perfect hair bow organizer for a little girl in your life.
Happy thrifting and creating!
